professional tree pruning
With the constantly changing weather, Melbourne has perfect growing conditions for many varieties of plant shrubs and trees. This can be both a blessing and a curse! That tree that was giving your garden some much needed summer shade, can very quickly get out of hand if not pruned effectively.
Pruning is especially necessary with fruit trees to keep them healthy and producing at their best. We can advise you on the best time of the year to prune, thin and deadwood. Certain fruit will only develop on new growth so picking the right time to prune your tree is essential to ensure you don’t miss out on a bumper crop!
At Monstera, we’ll assess your trees and provide tailored advice on the best pruning methods, determining the ideal amount of growth to remove for optimum health, vitality, and fruit production. We consider your tree’s specific species, age, current condition, and desired shape to create a pruning plan that encourages healthy growth, abundant fruiting, and a beautiful, well-maintained tree for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions
my fruit tree is not producing like it used to, will a prune help?
Often, yes! Pruning revitalises fruit trees by removing old wood, thinning the canopy for better sunlight and airflow, and eliminating dead or diseased branches. This encourages new growth and fruit production. While pruning is important, other factors like soil and pests also contribute. We can assess your tree and recommend the best approach for a healthy bumper harvest!
My neighbours trees are overhanging my property, what can I do?
In Victoria, you have the right to cut back overhanging branches to the property line at your own cost—this is called the ‘right of abatement’. However, we strongly recommend discussing the planned work with your neighbour beforehand, especially if it might affect them (e.g., reduce their privacy). It’s also crucial to check with your local council regarding tree protection orders. Protected trees may require permits for any pruning, and obtaining these permits is the homeowner’s responsibility. Monstera can provide expert tree pruning services, but we are not responsible for obtaining permits.
What's the difference between pruning, trimming, and shaping?
While often used interchangeably, these terms have distinct meanings. Pruning prioritises the tree’s health and long-term well-being, selectively removing branches for reasons like removing deadwood, improving airflow, and encouraging healthy growth. Trimming focuses more on aesthetics and maintaining a desired size or shape, often involving smaller cuts to create a neat appearance. Shaping is a type of trimming specifically aimed at creating particular forms or designs, like topiary. Essentially, pruning is for health, trimming for appearance, and shaping for design.
What do I do with the branches and debris after pruning?
Our standard service includes complete removal of all branches, leaves, and other debris generated during the pruning process. We’ll leave your property clean and tidy, so you don’t have to worry about the cleanup. Alternatively, if you’d like to put the branches to good use, we can chip them into mulch. This can then be used around your garden to help retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil as it decomposes.
